I'm a 22 year old student at Temple University. I discovered anime my freshman year at college, when I was channel surfing. I happened to come across Adult Swim which was playing Inuyasha. The animation caught my eye, and that was the end. It took me a couple days of watching to realize that what I was watching was in fact anime. From there, my interest progressed to other Adult Swim shows, and then finding other shows online. It's since become an obsession.
I started going to conventions the summer after I saw that first show. That was AnimeNext 2004. Since then, I've been going to more and more cons. This year, I've been to 8 so far (Ohayocon, Katsucon, Animazement, AnimeNEXT, Otakon, AFO, MangaNEXT, and Shikkaricon), and I have another 2 planned for this year (AnimeUSA and New York Anime Fest)
Cosplay has been a big focus of mine for the last 3 or years. I started cosplaying the year after I went to my first con, and started by having a costume commissioned. My first costume was a "Dog of the Military" from FMA. Basically a military uniform, paws and ears (which I sewed by hand), and a collar with a big foamie tag that says "Dog of the Military".
Last year, I studied in Japan for 4 months, and had an amazing time learning the language and the culture, as well as being constantly surrounded by manga, anime, and merchandise from them.
Anyway, that's a little bit about me and about my introduction to the anime/manga culture.
