Thank you!

Thanks for making this group. I may not be as hardcore of a gamer as some, but the gaming club at my school prides itself in its female members (partly because the prez, aka me, and vice prez are girls). I ran a Super Smash Brothers tournament this past spring, and we had two girls out of all thirty two competitors.

It saddens me how strong this stereotype is. I love video games, but because I'm an only child, and a girl, I was late getting into them just for that reason: video games are "for boys." It shows even in the titles that appeal more to female audiences where the main characters are portrayed by men. Sure, I don't care that Link is a guy, and most of the Final Fantasy boys are probably more feminine than me on my more tomboyish days, but its known we exist now, so how come we can't see more girls IN games as we play them?

Agreed. Nothing annoys me more than having to play as a guy all the time. I mean, how many games can you think of that have female main characters, but no selectable male characters. One comes to mind, the PC game American McGee's Alice.

It seems to me that they'll only have playable female characters if there are also playable male characters (Let's think Dark Alliance 1 & 2 and Jade Empire). And there are usually more guys than girls (2-1, 3-2 and 4-3, respectively). Why? Because girls are more okay with playing guys than guys are about playing girls (for the most part). Just as, and I'll use a cosplay reference here, girls are more likely to crossplay than guys. Because guys have their pride. That's really what it comes down to.

Do I think it's right? No. Does it need to change? Hell yes! Can we change it? Possibly. If there's a big enough demand, the gaming industry will deliver.

Its the same in everything really. From what I've seen, it seems women are more willing to identify with men, and I'd argue its because when men try to identify as women they feel emasculated. I go to a literary convention at Smith College every now and then and its always a big topic of conversation of at least one panel (then again, it IS Smith college). It happens all across the media: games, books, tv and movies. Heck, look what happened when they dubbed Cardcaptor Sakura! They changed the name to "Cardcaptors" and edited it to make Li almost as primary a character as Sakura so that the show might be more appealing to boys. Now I know, marketing wise this was a smart move because you have to supply to the demand and there is honestly less demand for female action heroes (especially in video games, to get more back to the point), but was it really that necessary?  Boys have enough super heroes to turn to both in and outside of anime, so why do we have to knock down a female heroine to give them one more?

Just another example of sexism in the world. But hey, I'm not complaining...not that I'm going to sit back and take it, either. I'll just combat it the best that I can.

Oh, much as I rant, me neither, lol. That's just what thirteen years in girl scouts and an all girls high school will do to one's sense of feminism though XD

yesss thanks for this group!

I have been through some situations where there are a lot of guyz talking about a game and said something I dont like, for example "XBox rules because it have shooters, Wii sucks and its for little kids" and I went like "Wii has the best on technology & cost balance, its games are just about to release and they are gonna be cool T.T" ... it was horrible because they were like: "yes of course....... what could you know about that" and then I have them all saying bad things about nintendo over me x_x; ohnoz... but hey! I could defend my point until they just shut up their mouths ;P

What about you? Do you have more stories???

Heyyy I like Pokemon new versions because you can chose male/female characters :]

I worked at EB Games for 2 years and it was a weekly thing for some guy to be like "why do you work here.." lol and I definately had a few times where a guy customer would wate for a male coworker of mine to ask him a question about a game and as soon as the question was asked, my coworker would tell the customer to go ask me instead because I could answer it better than he could.

Another wonderful moment was when I was cosplaying as Talim at a convention a few years back and there were people playing SC2 and I was like yay I wanna play as myself! :D so the guys playing were like lol cute, ok we're doing the next person in line plays winner and I was like yay sounds good! ^___^ ...I played for about 45 minutes before I started to feel bad so I decided to go do something else so other people could play lol. I really don't like to brag but I can't even begin to explain how many countless hours I've spent playing SC2 as Talim. I beat everything in Weapon Master mode and unlocked everything in the game. Then I started a new game, and did it again. lol
