ANIME FESTIVAL DELUXE Report
Posted On 11/07/2007 10:13:24
On September 29, it was celebrated the Anime Festival Deluxe Convention, organized by Otaku Yakuza. It was the first time this con was held on September (it always have been on December), but this was part of a new and very interesting idea here in my country: the first Cosplay Tournament. It consist on 3 cons (this one, Kodama Cosplay Reunion and Anime Festival XL), where judges will pick a total of 10 cosplayers to compete on the Cosplay Tournament, wich big price is to travel to Brasil to compete on an international Cosplay Competition. From Anime Festival Deluxe, the 3 individual winners will be the first selected to the great final.

I will finally debut my Great Saiyaman 2 (Videl) cosplay at this con, with my friends Sairack as Great Saiyaman (Gohan) and Jano as Super Boo. Talented Sairack made our awesome helmets, I loved mine!! It's just perfect. In exchange, I made him her green tunic and red cape (I suck on props, he sucks at sewing). Unfortunately, we were late, so we were unable to compete on masquerade. Also, Jano was sick, so he couldn't cosplay with us. Con staff give us the chance to do our skit out of competition, but we decide to save it for another ocasion (the audio included Jano's performance, but it will be just 2 of us). We have a great time anyways, making stupid poses for a lot of pics we were requested ^^

As we were late, we couldn't see the masquerade. That was sad, because it was great (from what I've heard and what I saw later on videos). Awesome costumes like Rukia's Esther Blanchett & Hiromi's Seth Nightlord from Trinity Blood, Garudamon from Digimon, She-Ra, Code Geass group, were part of this festival. First place was Ikari Gendo as Laguna Loire from Final Fantasy VIII, second place was for Neko Juanito with his amazing Ghostbuster costume, and the third place was Rauru as Garudamon. They all won immediatly their place to compete on the Cosplay Tournament. Best group was the cute Hina-chan as Nakoruru and Natosa as Rimururu from Samurai Spirits / Shodown, and people's award was split between Mog as She-Ra and Hoshi as Kasumi from DOA.
Soon I'll be posting my pics.

This was a great event, one of the few were we cosplayers are well treated. It was sad we couldn't participate, but there's always a next time, and we have a great time anyways.

RYUJIN CONCOMICS SANTIAGO Report
Posted On 10/13/2007 22:14:19

It's been a long time since the last time I wrote something here... well, a bit late, here's my Ryujin Concomics Santiago review.

Concomics is a comics, manga & anime convention held in the city of Valparaiso since 2001, and this is the first year that this convention was here in Santiago too. The place chosen was the "Plaza de los Comics" (something like "Comic Square"), in San Miguel district. This place is very cool and special, the first one in the country with statues of our local comics heros, like Condorito and Ogú & Mampato.

The main guests were Humberto Vélez & Gabriel Chávez, two mexican "seiyuu" (voice actors), most known by their work on "The Simpsons" latinamerican version, as Homer Simpson & Mr. Burns, respectively.
I was lucky to be able to meet Mr. Chávez, but Humberto Vélez was traveling to Valparaíso at that moment, so I couldn't meet him.

I went with a simple Nana Oosaki costume, the one with the Black Stones ripped shirt, from an Artbook illustration. I meet there with another Nana cosplayer (who's thin, not like me!), and her Hachi. They asked me to do a skit together, and I agreed. They are very nice.

Few cosplayers, but very interesting ones. A big Batman group (comics version) where the most showy. My favorites, The Joker, Scarecrow, and beautiful Rydia from Final Fantasy IV. The Joker won 1° place, Tsukasa from .hack/sign won 2° place and Rydia the 3° place. Scarecrow won an honorable mention.
Check out the cosplayers here: http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l104/Bulma_Shannaro/Ryujin%20Concomics/

A cool thing about this con, is that every registered cosplayer recieved 2 manga books as gifts, just for participate. I've got a Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle one, and a Karekano one.

I had fun, and this convention was different from the typical anime ones, that's something fresh and good ^^

KODOMO NO MATSURI 2007 Report
Posted On 08/24/2007 13:27:40

Every year, on "Children's Day" (first sunday of August), the fangroup "Otaku Usach" held the Kodomo no Matsuri event. The first year I attended, 2005, was a very fun and nice convention. Things changed on 2006, and changed even more, and for worst, now on 2007.

I wasn't going to this con, but a little girl I know was looking for Ranma 1/2 cosplayers to go with her Panda version Genma Saotome. My hair is black now, so I offer to be help her as Ranma-kun (I have the costume for my Ranma-chan cosplay). A friend of her join as Mousse. Our skit sucks, because we invented it 10 minutes before we go on stage!

Con staff did things in very little time, and for that reason, though their good intentions, the con was bad. Very few cosplayers, and fewer good ones, because of the bad organization and last-minute-everything.

Frost from Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, was by far the best costume and best skit. Panda Genma Saotome was cool and cute, but the lack of a good skit didn't help. Haruhi Suzumiya cosplayer sang the opening song in japanese, she indeed sings very well. And the rest of the cospays were recycled (used a lot on other cons before), or not very good.

Because of rain, staff decided to give every cosplayer a little gift, and the places of the contest were cancelled. My friend cosplaying Frost was very upset because of that (her costume and skit was superior). I've got a P-chan hat as a gift for cosplay lol.

Naty (Frost cosplayer) was mad, and we both were hungry, so we went to the ramen stand and she demandes ramen. And they give us one for free! We were about to go after finishing the ramen, but then a boy from the staff invited us to the "Instant Cosplay" contest. I know this kind of contest are quite popular on northamerican Cons, but is the first time I've heard of one here in Chile: 3 teams, 1 meter of black bystrech, 2 meters of red bystrech, thread to sew, needles, a scissors and 20 minutes to make Goku's costume. Naty, Valerie (Haruhi cosplayer) and me was ready for the challenge. Another girl join us, and then we start. Working under a lot of pressure, we finally won the first place on the contest! I was very proud and happy! I always think that if it weren't for my mother's help, my costumes will suck so much. But this time I felt I can do it ^^ (how childish thought, but yeah, we all are insecure little kids deep inside) lol.

Pics of the cosplayers, and of our ghetto Goku made in 20 minutes here: http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l104/Bulma_Shannaro/Kodomo%20No%20Matsuri%202007/

At the end I had a good time. It was nice to share with the other cosplayers and nice people at the Con, even when it was a bad Con.

NIPPON REVOLUTION Report ¬¬
Posted On 08/09/2007 11:58:59

Ahhh, this little event had too good cosplayers for such a bad organization.

I wasn't gonna cosplay, but I decide to dress up, as Nana Oosaki from NANA, as she appears on Manga volume 02 chapter 01 (Train to Tokyo, when she first meet Hachi). Mainly my own clothes. I meet with some friends who also was "público con style", wich makes me feel more comfortable.

There were few but nice cosplays: Naruto group (Sasuke-kun, Zabuza, gennin Hinata & TJ Hinata) won 1° place, good costumes and fun skit; Sakura Shinguji from Sakura Taisen won 2° place, very nice costume; Hikaru Shidou from Magic Knight Rayearth; Agatha Jun from Gatchaman (my favorite!); Kaio-Sama from Dragon Ball Z; Prince of Persia; Final Fantasy group; Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles group and Prince of Tennis group, were some of the cosplays. You can check out some of them here: http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l104/Bulma_Shannaro/Nippon%20Revolution/

The place where the cosplay contest was held was really inadequate. I don't know why they chose it. They "lost" some of the audios of the contestants, and the contest was "postponed". Finally, some cosplayers couln't participate, like the FF group. They were very disappointed.

I have fun anyways, with my friends and taking pictures, but I can't say it was a good event.

FUYU YASUMI 2 Report
Posted On 08/01/2007 15:46:18

I must admit I had high expectations about this convention. Last year I can't go to the first version, because I get sick, but I have heard by many people that it was a very cool convention. So this time I had to go.

I made a very simple costume for this ocasion, Videl from Dragon Ball Z, 25° Tenkaichi Budokai version.

This event was on a theather that has been demonstrated being very small for anime conventions. The place was FULL of people!! It was terrible to move around. I managed to get into the dressing room, but it was very small and so cold! And I was with the flu. The security people was kind of rude, and the crowded halls was very unpleasant. At least my costume was comfortable. There was a lot of anime merchandasing stands but no food ones!

But the cosplayers where great! Many cool costumes. So bad they can barely walk through people without damaging their costumes. Pics are not good in small places with very bad lighting, but there was very good costumes, so please check out my gallery: http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l104/Bulma_Shannaro/Fuyu%20Yasumi%202/

There were audio problems, and all cosplayers was squeezed in a small place waiting, that was very uncomfortable. The wait worth to see the masquerade. Mainly good costumes and well done/fun skits. The group masquerade was the best part, IMHO.

The Time Bokan group who won Group Division's 1° Place really deserve it. And I love Time Bokan so much! Male Division's 1° Place was Ikari Gendo as Ashram from Record of Lodoss War. Awesome costume with a cool presentation. I did not agree with the Female Division's 1° Place, Shorty from Bust a Move. The costume and skit was OK, but I think there was better ones (not mine of course!! xD). People's Choice? A boy dressed as L from Death Note. Girls go crazy for him, it surprised me. But I think, if they gonna win for being a whore, it's better to have a male winner! LOL

Other cosplays I liked: A.B.A. from Guilty Gear Isuka (I LOVED her Paraselsus *-*); Ivy from Soul Calibur; Kasumi Todoh from King of Fighters / Art of Fighting; Sailor Iron Mouse, Princess Serenity & Endymion from Sailor Moon; Yachiru from Bleach; one of the Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu groups; and the Fruits Basket group. Also a very funny Fairy OddParents group who did not compete.

I had a good time anyway, but I had to leave as soon as the winners were announced, because I was feeling sick because of the flu. I hope the next version of Fuyu Yasumi improve the mistakes they had this time.

NANA DAY CHILE Report!
Posted On 07/10/2007 16:09:25

I HAVE A BLAST!!

NANA DAY was this past Saturday 07, and I had a great time. My attendance was in danger when my mom get sick, but she demands me to go to the convention! My boyfriend had to work on weekend, and I already have bought his ticket, so I called my dear friend Vay (an awesome cosplayer), who has being retired from conventions because of her studies, and she went with me, and improvised a Hachi costume to hang out with me ^^

This was the first time I was going to participate on a thematic cosplay, wich means, there will be a lot of other cosplayers as the same character as me. Here in Chile is very rare to see the same character cosplayed twice at the same convention, so it was a weird experience.

As a NANA manga fan, I choose to cosplay Nana Oosaki. She reminds me a lot of myself at my late teens/early twenties. I was a lonely punk rocker girl too. The outfit I choose was from the manga (Volume 02, Chapter 02), with anime colors. Here you can see the reference pic: http://www.cosspace.com/photo/data/500/Nanavol2chap2.jpg

This wasn't a very recognizable Nana's outfit (like the Vivienne Westwood's "heart" jacket), but it was accurate. I had the Sex Pistols's "Good Save the Queen" shirt, the armor ring imitation, the exact number of earrings on each ear, etc. So I felt I did Nana justice.

NANA cosplayers was good. My friend Matti went as Misato, she looks very cute, and we did our performance together. There was like 5 other Nana O., most of them with the heart-jacket, and one (who looks like a small version of Mika Nakashima) with a very random closet cosplay. There was a ReiraXShin couple, I loved them! (they made me a happy fangirl). One of the Hachi cosplayers was specially good. A Nana/Hachi duo was very nice too, but they couldn't participate on masquerade. Too bad, because the 1° prize was a deluxe edition of Nana 2 movie, with an artbook. Awesome cosplayer Mr. Kobayashi was cosplaying Yasu, but as con staff, he couldn't participate on the contest. Everyone agrees that he will have won. The closet cosplay Nana won 1° place (with an accurate costume she would be a perfect Nana), and Shin cosplayer won 2° place.

In the anime/manga cosplay contest, I saw so many good costumes! Taurus no Aldebaran from Saint Seiya was my favorite, along with Kaio-Sama from Dragon Ball Z. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu group, and the girls from XxxHolic looks great too. As always, there was not so good costumes too, but costumes was mainly very good. The winners of this contest were kind of disappointing: the skimpiest and skinnier girls won 1° and 2° place. And there was no other categories (no 3rd place, no public prize).

Well, I have a really great time, posing and taking pics, goofing around with my Hachiko, even when I couldn't see the Nana 2 movie that was programed early. I felt very comfortable cosplaying Nana, and hope to cosplay more recognizable costumes of her in the future.

Wanna see chilean cosplayers from NANA DAY CHILE? Check out my gallery on Photobucket: http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l104/Bulma_Shannaro/Nana%20Day%20-%20Kodama

Not so good quality pictures, but I hope you like the cosplays ^^

PS: Please excuse all my redaction mistakes and mispells, I speak spanish!

What NANA DAY is
Posted On 06/29/2007 20:20:54

My first blog o.O

It may have a LOT of mistakes, but you have to remember that I speak spanish, so my english is very very bad (learned all by myself ._.).

WHAT'S "NANA DAY"?

Well... I made a poll a few days ago, about the NANA DAY celebrations, and I realize that most of the cosplayers here don't know anything about it. That's why I decide to write this.

The first time I heard (actually, read) about NANA DAY, I thought "what a ridiculous thing! But it sounds fun". The issue is that, in July 07, 2007 (07-07-07), a group of fans of Ai Yazawa's creation "NANA" (what group? no idea), decide to commemorate this manga/anime/movie with worldwide activities. Why on this specific date? Because "nana" (ナナ) means "seven" on japanese. So, many groups of different parts of the world (Spain, USA, Germany, Philippines, Singapore, China, Canada, Mexico, France, Chile, etc), decide to join this international festivity, with a lot of activities related to "NANA", including of course, Cosplay. A fan's page of singer/actress Nakashima Mika (http://www.lovemika.net) is sponsoring an international Nana Cosplay contest, besides the local Cosplay contests (by local organizations).

I'm a shonen fan, but when I started reading NANA (curious about this "punk" character my friends told me that I resemble), I fell in love with it. I thought about cosplaying Nana Oosaki, but declined 'cause Nana's clothes look a lot like my regular ones. But then, I knew about NANA DAY, and this was my chance to cosplay her ^^

If you wanna know if near your location will be NANA DAY celebrations, or you believe I'm freaking crazy and don't buy what I said, please check this link http://www.defectivegeeks.com/nanaday

AND WHAT IS "NANA"??

Nana Ai Yazawa

NANA is a manga by Ai Yazawa (Paradise Kiss, Gokinjo Monogatari). The main characters are Nana Komatsu (known as "Hachi"), a cute girl who easily fall in love and get her heart broken, and Nana Oosaki, a lonely punk rock singer who wants to become the best singer in Japan. Both meet in the train to Tokyo, and then a lot of interesting things happen that I'm not gonna tell you :3

You are welcome to correct my mispells and horrible redaction.
