There's a girl for every boy
Posted On 02/13/2008 20:45:18

One day he'll love her back!

Well, after all the sweat, frustration, doubt and anxiousness the mascot costumes Cody was working on are finished! He worked for months on both of them, and being honest I have to say I mainly got in the way.

We took them out to this years Ikkicon and they worked pretty well for their first time out! It was a chance to find out what doesn't work and what needs to be tweaked, but wow there was far more pluses than minuses.

We're considering taking them to Akon this summer, so I'm super excited about that as well. Yeah, I'm just proud of them all over the place.

New Costume Resolution

Well, I've made my list of projects for next year. I've also begun
the arduous task of collecting all the materials. But, I've hit a patch
of laziness and complete unmotivation. I know I'll be cursing my
procrastination when I'm crunched for time later. But, for the time
being...my ToDo list is made for next year and the con schedule is
getting filled as well.

I've got high hopes for next year, and all I can say is go Team Seaslug!

Dark Fae update
Posted On 11/06/2007 20:52:36

Well, after I realized I'd have to remake the dress, things got a
bit hairy. The dress doesn't look as good as it did the first time, but
it did the job pretty well. I was a bit more focused on the wings,
which worked alright. The straps weren't securred very well, so I need
to do some work on it.

I had also wanted to make horns, but
turned out not to have time before the party. I'll be going back to get
those done before I do a shoot on the costume. But, for the time being,
it's off my list. And that always feels good.

Next comes the ball
gown and the uniform for the Winter Ball in a couple months. Can't get
too comfortable resting on my laurels, but for now I'm taking a break.

Project List
Posted On 09/30/2007 19:21:35

Ok, lists help keep me motivated and the panic to a control minimum.
So, with that in mind, here are the list of projects I want to get done
soon.

Fix wing harness & Make horns for Dark Fae

Make dress, corset & wings for Winter Fae

I'm
having some trouble deciding if I want to make Harley Quinn next, or if
I should fix up my Helena costume before starting another bodysuit.

I need to get my materials for Ivy Valentine. Because I just know it's gonna be a long project.

So,
for the time being that's my list. It's subject to change, panic, no
money or swapping due to different interests at any time. Who the hell
knows, it'll be a surprise for all of us.

AFest Recuperation
Posted On 09/14/2007 12:57:09

Well, I know it's been a while since AFest ended, but I was battling the con plague. So, this had had to wait till now. I had ball!

The costumes I took worked out pretty well. Sakaki was more recognizable that I thought she'd be. And in general proved itself to be a kickass costume. I may go back to touch up a few things. But probably not for a while. If it ain't broke...don't fix it.

Helena also taught me a lot of things. I was sure the wig was gonna suck all kinds of bad. And while it wasn't that great, it still looked decent. The costume's difficult to move in though. Since you can't sit, it's hard to spend long amounts of time in it. The shoes were also extremely painful. But, I think once the wig gets fixed, and I buy a pair of better shoes, this costume will be unstoppable!

I've had to do so many things to pull off that costume, that I really feel like I was able to learn some stuff. Especially when it comes to working with wigs.

I probably won't be attending Onicon. So, that gives me some time to rest and do touch-ups to some costumes that I've been ignoring. Hopefully I'll have Helena all pimped and ready when Ikkicon comes around! FTW!

Wigs were made to torment us
Posted On 08/22/2007 21:44:32
Well, I shag-cut the Sakaki bangs. After the bang up job I did with the
styling gel, I thought it'd be better to "suggest" Sakaki's haphazard
bangs, rather than to portray them perfectly. If I wasn't so completely
convinced that I'll have to repair both travel-damaged wigs once we're
at the hotel, I've decided to put off defining the points in some of
the larger "gathers" till we're there. The cutting went pretty quickly
and fairly easily. Which I both expected and was grateful for.

The
Helena wig on the other hand is made of suck and hate. The stupid
things just don't want to stay up! The good news is I know that the
roller/scaffold works for holding the fiber in place till it sets. I
left my Got 2B Glued hair glue at my boyfriend's place. So, I'm having
to lay the Aqua-Net on like shellac! These bangs are supposed to be
gravity defying, and I'm doing my damnedest to make sure they'll stay
all day. The G2BG should be good for the base of each cluster. While
I'm hoping the hairspray will be light enough to hold the upper fiber.

Now,
it's just a matter of getting everything up and set. I know (like I
know gravity works) that I'll have to fix some part of it once we get
there. There's just no way it'll survive a 4hr car ride with no falling
whatsoever. It's just the way my luck with wigs has run.

It's
coming together....just really slowly. I'll need to get all the fiber
up and set in place, then I'll take the shears to it and sculpt the
Helena shape I like best.

After this is over, I'm making a new
rule. To always commission the really difficult wig stuff! And to
always send pictures of people with similar hair designs, so the
commissioner knows it won't look terrible on my head.

This wig/costume may in fact be the alter upon which my sanity is sacrificed!

Down to the wire
Posted On 08/21/2007 22:12:27

Cosplay seems to take a back seat when your job has you working 10 hr days 3 weeks in a row. It's especially bad when you have a convention deadline approaching.

90% of the big stuff is done. Now I just need to pull all the small things together. They say God is in the details, and I want all my costumes to make people fall on the floor at the sight of their awesomness.

It might not be feasible this time. Good might just have to be what they are. There's no time to fuss over every tiny detail, and my health (physical & mental) can't take it.

So here's to simply getting the work done....even though what I'm doing is really more like playing. When did my hobbies become so much freakin work?

Wig straightening
Posted On 08/01/2007 20:24:32

Well, after weeks of mulling it over I've finally hit on a fairly successful way to straighten my Helena wig. This will teach me to leave long wigs in their braids for nearly a year!

At first I did consider the hot water method for straightening this wig. For probably a full minute. Everyone uses it, and admittedly it's the best. But this wig is frighteningly long, and I don't have the equipment to properly hang dry an 18-20 inch wig.

So, instead I've worked out a system with a hairdryer, a curling iron, a wide tooth comb, and thankfully a copy of LoTR extended edition DVD commentaries!

When I finally pulled the wig out to work on the bangs, I realized how far behind I was, b/c of the set in waves. But thankfully this process cuts the make-up time nearly in half! Which will give me more time to work out how to tackle these gravity defying bangs of doom and hell!

Tap tap tap
Posted On 08/01/2007 12:42:33

Well, I think it's fair to say that after all the progress I made early last month, I've been experiencing a bit of burn out these past two weeks. Then again, I got a whole lotta crap done early last month, like I mentioned.

Now, I just need to catch the wind again for the final sprint to AFest. I've got probably the second half on both my costumes left to get done. So, even though I'm not really feeling in the mood yet, I'm gonna plow ahead and hope the muse strikes soon!
